Setting up a loyalty program: how big should the reward be?

A clear loyalty program helps customers and the front desk understand what today's visit contributes. Start with a reward the salon can sustain, then explain the conditions rather than choosing an impressive offer first.

01Choose the behaviour you want to encourage

Decide whether the goal is regular visits, rebooking or trying another service. Pick one main objective so the conditions stay understandable.

If progress is based on visits, explain it as visits. Do not describe it as a cash balance or money-convertible points if that is not how the program works.

02Calculate the cost before choosing a reward

Consider average visit value, supplies and staff time. A complimentary service can consume peak appointment time even if materials are inexpensive.

For illustration, a reward after five visits with an additional cost of USD 10 spreads that reward cost across the qualifying visits at roughly USD 2 each. This is an internal example, not a recommended offer for every salon.

03Explain the conditions in a few sentences

Customers should know what counts, how many visits are needed, what they receive and how to redeem it. Explain any limits or expiry before they start.

Give the whole team one explanation. Do not leave each person to invent a different reward.

  • Which visits qualify?
  • When does the reward become available?
  • How is it redeemed?
  • What conditions apply to rewards already issued?

04Carry over existing progress accurately

When moving from paper cards, check the customer's existing progress and enter an appropriate starting amount. Imported progress is not a set of visits that happened today.

Tap2Check-In maps starting progress against the business reward threshold: complete thresholds become available rewards and the remainder stays as progress. It does not fabricate visit history or messages.

05Review redemption before changing the offer

Check whether customers understand the program, staff can explain it and rewards are easy to deliver. If redemption is low, ask why before increasing the offer.

When changing conditions, explain when they take effect and how existing entitlements will be handled. Do not promise changes automatically rewrite older rewards without checking the process.

Frequently asked questions

Is there one right reward percentage for every salon?

No. Costs, capacity and margins differ. Calculate what your salon can sustain before choosing a reward.

Does imported progress create visit history?

No. It is carried-over progress for starting the program, rather than new check-ins.

Should I add rewards for Google reviews?

Do not tie rewards to Google reviews. Use visits or service conditions that are independent of reviewing.
